THREADS OF RESILIENCE
Claudia A. Cruz & Inês Queirós
Presented as part of the exhibition
FEMALE GAZE & POWER at Syker Vorwerk –
Center for Contemporary Art
in October 2024.
In Threads of Resilience, Claudia A. Cruz and Inês Queirós explore weaving and embroidery as feminist forms of expression. Inspired by mythical figures such as Penelope and the Mayan goddess Ix Chel, they use traditional techniques like the Mexican backstrap loom and Randa embroidery to make narratives of female resilience, wisdom, and collective strength visible. Their work approaches textile art not merely as craft, but as a means of communication, resistance, and communitybuilding.
By recontextualizing these techniques, A.Cruz and Queirós reflect on the societal relevance of women’s labor and call for its recognition as a culturally significant and foundational contribution.
