In her series “On the State of Things,” the artist explores her own emotions and experiments with different modes of representation. With her minimalist but precisely arranged compositions, her initially innocuous images develop a power that creates a tense dialogue between form and content. The aesthetic appearance is deceptive. Fabrics conceal more than they reveal. Beneath them, bodies can be made out, and postures and gestures are also recognizable. In her large-format photo series, A. Cruz takes as her starting point human emotional states, which in personal or general crisis situations also include feelings of not belonging, and she addresses questions of identity, gender roles, fashion, and beauty.
