Does a portrait necessarily have to show the face in order to tell us something about a person?

I explore this question in this work, focusing on hair as a component of female identity. I treat hair like faces as carriers of information that bring us closer to people, with portraits oscillating between showing and hiding, protecting and revealing. I am interested in examining and questioning the way we perceive things.

When does a portrait become a portrait?
